Lifeworks for the young at heart
With growing up comes wisdom, experience and often better self-confidence and fewer insecurities. When we refer to growing up, it’s not a specific age, it’s a sense of being.
You’ve probably come across a younger person who already acts older than their years, or a parent, or grandparent, who has a better social life than their offspring, is more physically active and has a greater general “zest” about them? As long as you have your health, age really is just a number.
Remaining young at heart is simple! Check out our top tips towards becoming happier and healthier no matter your age:1
Learn from your mistakes. We all make them so don’t be too hard on yourself. If you have regrets about overdoing things in your youth or not looking after yourself the way you perhaps should have, share them. Most importantly though, don’t dwell on the past.2 You can’t change it so now is the time to just focus on the future. Speak to others around you – you won’t be the only one looking to embark on a healthier lifestyle, so find out what inspires and motivates others and make new friends in the process.
Keep mentally stimulated
Keeping your mind ticking over can help ward off boredom, depression and anxiety.3 It’s easy to watch a tv screen or flick through social media pages, but if you find yourself becoming addicted to screens, it’s time to try something new. Read a book, color in a picture, make something from scratch, cook or learn a new skill.
Remain physically active
It doesn’t matter if you’re not an athlete. Join the club! Most of us are capable of slipping on a pair of shoes and heading out for a walk, whatever our fitness levels. Getting out in the fresh air does wonders for both mental clarity and physical wellbeing.4 Oxygen levels increase, your skin glows and blood starts pumping around your vital organs. You’ll also find you may sleep better and wake each morning feeling more refreshed.
Nourish your body with healthy foods
By no means do we mean starve yourself or deny yourself the odd piece of chocolate or glass of wine. It’s about finding a balance. On a day-to-day basis though, try to avoid unnatural flavors, preservatives and additives. They can have little nutritional value and can leave you lacking in the vitamins and minerals that can help keep colds, stomach bugs and other illnesses away. “Healthy” foods, such as whole grains, good fats, fruits and vegetables can help to keep your body healthier and could help you to avoid brain fog.5
“Youth” is as much a state-of-mind as a state-of-body and aging can be one of the happiest times of your life! Seek out like-minded people with the greatest zest, whatever their age, and live fully in the here-and-now to enjoy a healthier, happier lifestyle.
