How to benefit from the best skincare routine
Knowing where to start with a good skincare routine might seem confusing, but you needn’t feel overwhelmed. The best skincare routine is one that simple and easy to stick to. Soon, your skin will be feeling fresh and looking fantastic on a daily basis.
With so many options available in the form of cleansers, toners, moisturisers, serums and other targeted treatments, it’s no wonder that you might be confused about where to start.
This handy five step skincare routine is suitable for everyone:
- Cleanser
Choose a gentle cleanser. Some great ingredients to look out for are aloe vera, which hydrates and soothes, and jojoba oil that helps to condition the skin. Cleanse your skin morning and evening to remove any dirt or residue. This could build up from makeup or sunscreen you’ve applied during the day, or natural oils that accumulated in your sleep. Be gentle. Gently pat your skin dry and don’t rub.
2. Serum
While your skin is still slightly moist and freshly cleansed, it’s the ideal time to apply a serum. Just a few drops will treat your whole face. Serums are highly concentrated and designed to sink into your skin quickly, delivering an intensive dose of the ingredients they contain.
3. Moisturiser
Once your serum has absorbed into your skin you can then apply your moisturiser. Use this over your whole face but avoid the eye area. The eye are is more delicate and will benefit from a cream specifically for this area. Your skincare needs will change between the seasons and throughout your life, so opt for a well-rounded moisturiser that performs well for you.
4. Eye cream
Eye cream is best used after your face moisturiser. You only need to use a pea-sized amount as a little goes a long way. Apply using your ring finger, which will result in a more delicate touch and don’t apply too much pressure. Be gentle and either tap, or lightly massage your eye cream in. Don’t pull at your skin and be careful not to get the cream too close to your eyes.
5. Sunscreen
No matter what the weather, sunscreen is an important step in your morning skincare routine. Not only will it prevent you from burning, but it will help avoid premature aging, dark spots and wrinkles. Always apply your sunscreen last and if you are spending time in the sun, don’t forget to reapply it throughout the day.
A note on some popular skincare ingredients
Powerful ingredients can have powerful results, so you should be mindful of how and when to use them!
Hyaluronic acid
This is a powerful hydrator with a gooey texture. It smoothens and plumps and can be used daily to target dryness and will compliment other skincare products.
Bakuchiol
Derived from the Psoralea corylifolia plant, Bakuchiol has been shown to improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles, increase elasticity and firmness, and reduce hyperpigmentation and photo-damage.
Vitamin C
Studies have shown Vitamin C to be a powerful ingredient in slowing early skin aging, preventing sun damage and improving the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots and acne.
AHAs/BHAs
Alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids act as skin exfoliants. The difference is that AHAs are water soluble so work on the surface of the skin, whereas BHAs are considered oil soluble so can also work within the pores. Examples of AHAs are glycolic and lactic acid. Salicylic acid is a BHA. They should be introduced into your skincare routine slowly to test for any sensitivities.
A final note on achieving your perfect skincare routine
One of the best ways to achieve a great skincare routine is to opt for a trusted brand that has formulated a full range of products. That way you’ll know each step of the routine has been designed to work in synergy, and that any ingredients that would interact negatively have been avoided. However, if your skin is highly sensitive, or you suffer with a skin condition, you may wish to introduce each product gradually. We hope you love your new skincare routine!
